ENTITY  - 1st MINI SOLO ALBUM

ENTITY is a showcase of his songwriting and storytelling abilities. He is expressive in his lyrics and knows how to set a mood. On ENTITY, Cha Eunwoo also plays with his voice, adapting it to each song’s arrangement and production. The first thing you notice about the title track “STAY” is the gorgeous melody. It’s simple yet effective in catching the listener’s attention. Then comes Eunwoo’s beautiful vocals, who relies on his chest voice with moments of airiness. While the album’s primary theme is love and longing, songs like “WHERE AM I” and “Memories” also find Eunwoo contemplating his life choices and dealing with regret while also reminiscing about the past with hopefulness. This adds maturity and depth to the project, making it more dynamic compared to a monotonous album about love. The album has a sense of cohesiveness through its sound and lyrical themes, something that many debut albums struggle with. It is also worth noting that the title track is not the first track on the album, which shows us that the album hopes to tell a story rather than be a collection of songs. Therefore, with all the elements combined, ENTITY is a well-executed debut album with a clear sense of identity.

SONGS

1. U&I

CHA EUN WOO eases us into his mini-album with the mellow U&I. It is quite a dreamy track with a jazzy influence coming through. CHA EUN WOO’s vocals are sweet and soothing, and the melodies have that sought-after swaying effect that I like. Altogether, it is a warm opening. Since the album is co-written by Eunwoo himself, the lyrics are definitely worth looking at. Almost entirely in Korean, the lyrics of the song perfectly express the feeling of being infatuated by a first love. The song could have easily been a cutesy uptempo love song, but Cha Eunwoo chose to make it moodier, setting the tone for the rest of the album. (8/10)

2. FUXKING GREAT TIME

The next song is a smooth R&B track, led by an electric guitar and some synth bass. Fu*king Great Time is definitely one of the bolder tracks on this mini-album for several reasons. One of them is the f-bombs that CHA EUN WOO drops so smoothly as part of the song delivery. It is definitely unexpected for CHA EUN WOO, who is well known for his boy-next-door charms in the KPOP industry. His deeper vocals are also highlighted so well in the song. F*cking Great Time is also the only track on the mini-album with a choreography routine. (9/10)

3. STAY (TITLE SONG)

The first thing you notice about “STAY” is the gorgeous melody. It’s simple yet effective in catching the listener’s attention. Then comes Eunwoo’s beautiful vocals, who relies on his chest voice with moments of airiness. This combination conveys the desperation found in the lyrics of the song. Co-written by Eunwoo, the song is about feeling lost without the person you love and you hope they will just stay with you. It’s also worth noting that “STAY” is the third track in the album. It deals with the aftermath of a breakup and reflects mixed feelings about the relationship.

4. WHERE AM I

“WHERE AM I” is an alternative rock ballad with alternative drums and heavy bass, creating a heavy mood. Eunwoo’s soft vocals are heartbreaking but also soothing.

With the piano, “WHERE AM I” sounds gorgeous, and its lyrics convey a deep sense of longing. After losing the person he loves, Eunwoo feels lost in his world and is on the verge of losing himself. The retrospective lyrics are extremely somber and convey the hopelessness one might feel. It is impossible not to think of his fellow ASTRO member, Moonbin, when reading the lyrics to “WHERE AM I”

5. YOU'RE THE BEST

The final song on the digital version of the album, “You’re the best” is an indie folk song. The production is simple, using just an acoustic guitar as its main theme. After the tumultuous relationship that took him through excitement, heartbreak, desperation, and hopelessness, Eunwoo rises above. The lyrics to the song look back at the person with fondness and compare them to a shining light. The sweetness of the song makes it a perfect closing track for the album.

6 MEMORIES - CD only.

A pop ballad, “Memories,” has a beautiful melody and conveys in its lyrics how precious memories and affection shared through all the difficult and happy moments will remain forever. Releasing his first solo album after eight years in the industry, the song is special for him as an artist and for his fans, who have stuck by him.
